We stopped to rest when I looked to the west and saw my first glimpse of the enormous snowbound Kangshung East Face of Everest sticking up above a black mountain. I recognized it from the many photos in Stephen Venables book, and I identified the South Col, the South Summit, the Hillary Step and the summit for the rest of the group.
